The university correspondents form a human chain on the campus protesting attacks on them during the clashes. Police take away some of the eight detained.

Clashes between two groups of Jagannath University (JnU) unit activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League yesterday left at least 10 injured while eight others were detained. Several classrooms and the university canteen were also vandalised.

The university authority has formed a five-member committee to probe the incident.

Police said some members of Babar group beat up one Arafat, belonging to the former general secretary's (GS) group, in JnU. In retaliation, the GS group with North Bengal and South Bengal groups beat up some members of Babar group, leading to violent clashes.

During the clashes from around 12:00noon to 2:00pm, they gave chase and counter chase with hockey and bamboo sticks.

Later police intervened, charging baton and picking up eight activists.

Acting proctor Dr Ashok Kumer Saha of JnU told The Daily Star that around 200 criminals in guise of students were responsible for the clashes and vandalism.

He also said the probe committee, headed by anthropology department Prof Hasna Hena Begum, will submit its report by seven working day.

PM's intervention sought to free JnU halls

Teachers, students and employees of Jagannath University yesterday demanded of the government to free its twelve residential halls and lands occupied by various quarters for long.

They sought for the prime minister's intervention to retrieve the dormitories for solving the acute accommodation problems.

They made the demand at a human chain formed from Shahid Minar to main entrance of the campus in the city.

At the human chain started from around 12:00noon, Jagannath University Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mesbahuddin Ahmed said the university authorities had been trying to retrieve the residential halls in the city's Bangshal and Katwali for long but failed.

He also urged the government to evict the grabbers and sought for the prime minister's help in this regard.

The vice challenger also said the authorities would soon announce several programmes, including strike-unto-death, to press home their demand.

University Proctor Kazi Asaduzzaman Khan said that students were allowed to live in the halls during the Jatiya Party regime, though the university had no legal documents of these establishments.

He said, they requested the higher authorities concerned several times to recover the halls, but they didn't take enough steps.

The university sources alleged that the twelve dormitories of university have long been under the occupation of former lawmakers, leaders of Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal, local criminals and even the government organisations like the Dhaka City Corporation and police.

Many of these illegal occupants have even prepared fake documents of their ownership of these university's dorms.

Meanwhile, the students also brought out a procession following the human chain on the campus for the same demand.
